Gwacheon: The People Power Party's presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo registered his candidacy with the election watchdog Sunday, pledging to win the presidency and make South Korea a "great country."
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim emphasized the significance of the upcoming presidential election, stating it will select a leader capable of overcoming South Korea's current challenges and striving for the people's happiness. After registering with the National Election Commission in Gwacheon, just south of Seoul, he expressed his determination to be elected and to work tirelessly towards enhancing the nation.
On Saturday, the People Power Party's (PPP) all-member meeting rejected a motion from the party's leadership to replace Kim with former Prime Minister Han Duck-woo as their presidential candidate. This decision concluded a weeklong internal dispute between Kim and the party leadership. Kim, a former labor minister, had secured the party's nomination through primaries but faced pressure to merge campaigns with Han, who had shown stronger polling numbers against Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party.
Kim expressed gratitude for the party's decision, calling it "highly unusual" and "a surprising miracle." He thanked the party members for "upholding democracy" and supporting his candidacy.
Ahead of the June 3 presidential election, Kim plans to focus on building a "big tent" coalition, aiming to expand unity both within and outside the party. He pledged to work towards national unity and to listen to the voices of the people.
