West Asia Crisis Calls for ASEAN to Bolster Energy Security: Onn Hafiz

Johor bahru: The West Asian crisis serves as a significant reminder for ASEAN countries, especially Malaysia, to enhance and diversify their energy security, cooperation, and trade and supply chains. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi emphasized the potential severity of the energy crisis and geopolitical upheaval's impact.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Onn Hafiz pointed out that the ongoing conflict will likely intensify the disruptions and swift transitions characteristic of the current era. Speaking at the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) Strategic Forum 2026 on Monday, he urged ASEAN nations to collaborate for mutual benefit, not only to thrive but also to tackle other critical challenges such as climate change and the rise of artificial intelligence.

Onn Hafiz assured that the Johor state government is closely monitoring the situation and is committed to protecting its citizens from the global energy crisis and geopolitical turmoil, including inflationary pressures. He highlighted the government's proactive engagement with businesses to address their concerns and challenges, pledging to explore solutions collaboratively.

He also stated Johor's intention to become a hub for investment, business, ideas, and dialogue regarding the current situation, aiming to reinforce cooperation through the JS-SEZ. Additionally, he noted that the state government, in partnership with Singapore, is focused on attracting high-impact investments in sectors like advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, green energy, and smart logistics.

Johor's promotion of the JS-SEZ has garnered international interest, notably from industry leaders in Shanghai, China. Onn Hafiz reported that a recent event saw participation from over 150 business owners and senior executives, with 36 expressing commitments or strong intentions to invest in Johor.
