Silverstone to Stage F1 Sprint Race in 2026

Silverstone: The British Grand Prix is set to be one of six sprint events on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar. Silverstone, which last hosted a sprint in 2021 when the format was first introduced, will once again feature this high-intensity race format.

According to BBC, the most unexpected addition to the sprint schedule is Singapore. Given the street circuit's reputation for challenging overtaking opportunities, its inclusion as a sprint venue is surprising to many. Meanwhile, Barcelona's contract is set to expire after next season, but it remains a contender for rotation with the Belgian Grand Prix. The Belgian Grand Prix has secured a new contract, allowing it to host races in four of the next six years. Other countries expressing interest in joining the rotation include Germany, Portugal, and Turkey.

F1 is also finalizing plans for a potential new race in Bangkok, Thailand, possibly starting in 2028. Since 2023, there have been six sprints each year, and while this number remains unchanged for 2026 due to the introduction of new chassis and engine regulations, there are considerations to increase the number of sprint events to as many as 12 by 2027. This expansion would mean that sprints could occur at half the races during the season.

A sprint event consists of a shorter race with its own qualifying session, preceding the standard qualifying and main event. In contrast, a traditional grand prix weekend includes three practice sessions before the qualifying and grand prix. Discussions are ongoing regarding potential modifications to the sprint format, such as implementing reverse grids.

F1 President Stefano Domenicali remarked that the sprint events provide more action and engagement for fans, broadcasters, and promoters by offering four competitive sessions instead of two during a typical grand prix weekend. This format not only enhances the experience for fans but also boosts revenue, as promoters are willing to pay a premium to host sprint events. Domenicali further noted that the 2026 season, with its new regulations, will bring added excitement, especially with the introduction of three new sprint venues.
