Selangor: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has once again urged the state government to prioritise resolving flood issues through comprehensive planning and more effective, immediate action. The Ruler said he had repeatedly advised the government to seek expertise from international specialists, particularly from the Netherlands, to develop sustainable solutions to the long-standing problem.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sultan Sharafuddin expressed his concerns during his royal address at the opening of the Fourth Session of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly. He noted that although allocations are made every year to address floods, no effective results are visible, and flooding continues to occur in several areas, especially residential zones, causing hardship to his people. The Sultan emphasized his commitment to advocating for action until the issues of flooding and clean water supply are permanently resolved.
The Ruler also highlighted the importance of cleaning the Klang River to ensure a sustainable supply of clean water for the growing population. He proposed that the state government place greater focus on developing the waste-to-energy industry, describing it as a key sector for addressing waste management and sustainable energy challenges.
In addition, Sultan Sharafuddin called for a more systematic and integrated approach to tackling potholes, a persistent issue affecting road users. He also addressed the matter of pig farming, reiterating that such activities are unsuitable in Selangor due to land constraints, proximity to densely populated Muslim areas, and concerns over river and air pollution. He suggested that pork supply for non-Muslims could be sourced from other regions, including Sarawak.
Meanwhile, the Sultan advised political leaders to set aside differences and work together for the benefit of the people, especially amid current economic uncertainties. He expressed concern over excessive politicking, which he believes confuses the rakyat and can lead to division. The Sultan urged leaders to fulfil their responsibilities with trust, honesty, and sincerity to ensure Selangor continues to progress and prosper.
