Presidential election poses big challenge for indonesian media: KPI

Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA News) – The 2019 presidential election is a huge challenge for Indonesias media that stood divided in the 2014 presidential election, according to the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI).

“There were only two presidential candidates in the 2014 presidential election, and the same trend will be repeated in the 2019 elections. This is a big challenge faced by broadcasting institutions and KPI,” KPI Chairman Yuliendre Darwais remarked here, Friday evening.

He said several complaints had been received about the media being unfair and in favor of only a certain presidential candidate.

The KPI lauded the public for being critical and encouraged them to report any violation by the media.

During the 2014 presidential election, the ballot counting process was still ongoing, but television stations had already published the results of quick count, he recalled.

“During the 2019 presidential election, an agreement was reached among the General Election Commission (KPU), Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu), and KPI that results of quick count could only be published when the ballot counting process is completed at the polling station level,” he noted.

There are only 16 national television networks and 25 radio stations on the KPI registration list.

The KPI, however, estimated that a total of 2,006 radio stations and 1,080 local television stations as well as 309 paid television stations exist in Indonesia.
