Nilai: National cycling programme technical director John Beasley has confirmed that national men's track cyclist Muhammad Ridwan Sahrom will miss the upcoming 2026 Track Cycling World Cup after suffering a serious shoulder injury.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Beasley stated that Muhammad Ridwan sustained an acromioclavicular (AC) joint injury following a crash in the keirin event. Initial assessments have indicated a grade three to grade four injury, which may necessitate surgery. Beasley mentioned that while the injury is severe, it is not as debilitating as a previous knee injury suffered by another top cyclist.
The injury is expected to require a lengthy rehabilitation period to regain full strength. Further evaluations by doctors at the National Sports Institute are awaited to determine the exact course of treatment. In the meantime, Beasley and the coaching team are set to reassess the sprint line-up, planning to conduct several trials this week to identify the best team combination moving forward.
Beasley emphasized that all possible scenarios, including reshuffling positions within the team, will be considered. He acknowledged the impact of Muhammad Ridwan's absence, as well as that of Muhammad Shah Firdaus, on the national sprint squad. However, he stressed that the priority would be the full recovery of the injured cyclist, especially with the Asian Games later this year.
Muhammad Ridwan's injury occurred following a crash during the Keirin event at the Track World Cup series in Hong Kong on Saturday. In light of his absence, young national rider Adib Andhar Adnan is expected to be among those considered to fill the vacancy at the 2026 Track Cycling World Cup.
The 2026 Track Cycling World Cup is scheduled to take place at the National Velodrome Malaysia in Nilai from April 24 to 26.
