Malaysia-Turkiye US$10 Billion Bilateral Trade Target Within Reach, Says PM Anwar

Penang: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his confidence that the Malaysia-Turkiye bilateral trade target of US$10 billion is achievable, thanks to ongoing programmes and investments. He highlighted the implementation of effective initiatives that are starting to yield positive outcomes.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar mentioned that Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani will provide details on existing and emerging trade and investment programmes. This announcement was made during a press conference before Anwar concluded his official visit to Turkiye.

Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s Finance Minister, pointed out that Turkiye has a robust economy. Malaysia, though smaller, is experiencing rapid growth and has become an attractive hub for high-value investments, particularly in sectors like semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centres, and new technologies, including the rare earth industry.

He expressed optimism that the cooperation between Malaysia and Turkiye would extend beyond traditional trade, incorporating new disciplines that will be bolstered through educational and research partnerships between the two nations.

Malaysia’s trade with Turkiye from January to November 2025 reached RM21.2 billion (US$4.92 billion), reinforcing Turkiye’s significance as an economic partner for Malaysia. In 2024, Turkiye was Malaysia’s third-largest trading partner, its largest export destination, and the fourth-largest source of imports among West Asian countries, with total trade valued at RM24.15 billion (US$5.28 billion).
