LCE underscores need for massive drive against smoking (Philippines News Agency)

Mayor Jose Enrique Garcia III of Balanga City, Bataan underscored the need for a massive campaign against smoking such that it will not only be confined in cities but also in municipalities.

Garcia, the interim president of Smoke Free Cities Asean Network (SCAN) Philippines, made the remark during the two-day 3rd Smoke-free Cities ASEAN Regional Workshop hosted by this city that culminated Thursday.

He emphasized that it is important to help every mayor in the crafting of ordinances against smoking, massive information drive and monitoring.

and lt;P and gt;The information campaign will be directed to parents, children and barangays or villages.

Garcia said that they are now looking for best activity to boost the full-implementation of the smoke-free city campaign.

Dr. Ivanhoe Escartin of the Department of Health (DOH) said that tobacco farmers are encouraged to shift to others crops as an alternative livelihood.

Escartin said that tobacco smoking has been associated with the death of some 17.3 million smokers in the Philippines. (PNA)
