EU Highlights Support for Small Island Developing States at UN Forum

New York: The European Union (EU) has emphasized its commitment to the development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) during the UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The special session focused on addressing the unique challenges faced by these nations.

According to European Union, the EU is enhancing its partnership with SIDS through the Global Gateway strategy. This initiative aims to improve connections in digital, energy, and transport sectors while strengthening global health, education, and research systems. The third UN Ocean Conference, held in Nice, served as a platform to discuss SIDS's priorities, emphasizing the need for a sustainable blue economy and recognizing multidimensional vulnerability for international funding allocation.

Collaboration with the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), which includes all SIDS except Singapore, has been a critical focus. The EU and OACPS issued a joint statement at the FFD4, reaffirming their commitment to multilateralism and the 2030 Agenda. The statement highlighted the necessity of closing the global financing gap for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through diverse sources of financing.

The EU has committed to addressing three main issues for SIDS: adopting new metrics like the OACPS Multidimensional Vulnerability and Resilience Index (OMVRI), enhancing debt management, and supporting reforms in international financial architecture. The establishment of EU-SIDS informal dialogues, co-chaired by representatives from the EU and Samoa, provides a platform for political exchange and practical implementation of ABAS, focusing on climate action and ocean governance.

The EU has urged all states to ratify the BBNJ agreement on biodiversity in high seas and is organizing a side event on ABAS implementation through international partnerships in July 2025. The UN's role in supporting SIDS to achieve sustainable development goals is crucial, with the integration of ABAS implementation into various strategic and work plans.

The EU and its Member States are prepared to collaborate with the UN for the swift and effective implementation of ABAS, ensuring support for SIDS in achieving their development objectives.
