Electrical safety and ASEAN economic integration will highlight the three-day 2015 National Midyear Convention of electrical practitioners and professionals starting on Friday, May 22 at SMX Convention Center in Lanang, this city.

Under the theme IIEE @ 40: A Journey of Service for Excellence, IIEE Southern Mindanao Regional Governor Engr. Joseph Darren Claire Solicar said at least 800 electrical practitioners and professionals from all over the country are expected to attend the event.

IIEE Davao chapter vice-president for technical affairs Engr. Leonardo Apalisoc revealed that there will be 12 technical sessions and seven product presentations during the activity which will formally open on May 22.

Among the speakers, Apalisoc said is Dr. Paul Blackmore, an Australian doctor of electrical engineering who flew to Davao just to speak before Filipino electrical practitioners and professionals about the international best practices for distribution and transmission asset risk management.

Blackmore is a consultant for EA Technology in the Asia Pacific region, a specialist engineering consulting, service, and technology provider supporting the electricity supply industry. His specialty practice area is in the implementation of condition and risk based decision support tools to improve asset management decision making.

We must further professionalize the electrical engineering profession in the country in order to compete with the other electrical professionals within the ASEAN-member nations, IIEE Davao chapter President Engr. Floyd Gamad said.

Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla and Mayor Rodrigo Duterte are among the guest speakers on May 23 and May 24, respectively.

This is the second time that the IIEE national event was held in Davao City. In 2009, IIEE Davao City chapter also hosted the IIEE National Midyear Convention. During that time, Engr. Arthur Escalante, a DavaoeAo, was the organization’s national president.

Solicar said this year’s midyear convention is an opportunity for electrical practitioners and professionals to enhance their skills and capabilities.

Solicar said the activities will start this morning with a motorcade at around 9:00 in the morning from Roxas Avenue passing through Ponciano Reyes Street, San Pedro Street, Quirino Avenue, JP Laurel Avenue towards SMX Convention Center in Lanang, Davao City.

Participants will also be toured to the newly-opened 300-MW coal-fired power plant of Aboitiz Power subsidiary Therma South Incorporated located in Binugao, Toril and to the switchyard of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) also in Toril.

For newly-registered electrical engineers and master electricians, Solicar said is also holding jobs fair participated by power utilities such as Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC), electrical contractors, and other companies to guide young electrical practitioners to the right path of their career.

This (jobs fair) is an opportunity for young electrical practitioners to pursue their dreamed profession, Solicar added.

There will also be a Skills Olympics to be held at the EE laboratory in University of Mindanao Matina Campus.

Since electrical practitioners and professionals also need sound mind and body, the 2015 NMYC features sports activities such as golf at Apo Golf and Country Club, Tennis at Belisario Heights, Bowling and Billiards at SMX lanang.

IIEE national officers and staff led by IIEE National President Engr. Ma. Sheila Cabaraban is already in the city since last night.

Members of the Professional Regulation Commission Board of Electrical Engineering namely – Engr. Francis Mapile and Engr. Jaime Mendoza are also here in the city to conduct an interview and preliminary screening for applicants for Professional Electrical Engineer (PEE) Licensure.

Engr. Mendoza will also speak on the guidelines on PEE Licensure Exam tomorrow while Engr. Mapile will fly back to Manila to attend to other much earlier-scheduled commitments. (PNA) CTB/LCM/JLC/ldp
