Phnom penh: The Royal Governments of Cambodia and Thailand are set to sign a strategic peace agreement this month, aiming to restore diplomatic relations and ensure long-term stability between the two countries, according to H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Prak Sokhonn announced that both nations have agreed on the peace document’s content, which is expected to be signed by the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand during the upcoming ASEAN Summit. The signing will be witnessed by U.S. President H.E. Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister H.E. Anwar Ibrahim, the current ASEAN Chair.
The negotiations on the peace agreement concluded on October 17 in Malaysia after intensive discussions. The peace document reaffirms both nations’ commitment to upholding the ceasefire declared on July 28, respecting each other’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national independence, and outlines steps to de-escalate military presence along the border.
Thailand has agreed to the immediate release of 18 Cambodian soldiers detained since July 29, 2025, soon after the ceasefire took effect, as confirmed by H.E. Prak Sokhonn. Both sides have pledged to resolve remaining border disputes peacefully and without force.
Beyond security measures, the agreement includes provisions for enhanced cooperation in combating cross-border crimes, such as online scams, and rebuilding diplomatic relations, which had deteriorated to their lowest level since July 23 due to escalating tensions.
H.E. Prak Sokhonn emphasized the importance of restoring normalcy and bringing peace and prosperity to both nations, highlighting their shared responsibility as permanent neighbors.
