Phnom penh: Cambodia successfully exported its first container of durian, meeting required quality standards, to China on July 17, marking a significant milestone for the country’s export diversification of the fruit.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the shipment, weighing approximately 17 tonnes, was facilitated by HF Fruit Ltd., which began operations on May 1 in Thbong Khmum province, in collaboration with a Chinese partner.
The company plans to export tens of tonnes of Cambodian durian by sourcing the fruit directly from local farmers, particularly in the province. The presence of a local packaging and export company sparked optimism of Director of the Thbong Khmum Provincial Department of Agriculture Mr. Heng Piseth who was confident in the potential for increased durian exports to China.
He said that previously, durian in his province were primarily exported to Vietnam and Thailand, and with access to the Chinese market, farmers have a promising new opportunity and more competitive prices. Cambodia currently has 5,289 hectares dedicated to durian cultivation, with 3,403 hectares actively harvested, producing approximately 36,656 tonnes annually. Thbong Khmum province alone contributes 950 hectares, presenting its importance in the durian supply chain.
