DILG Orders Mandatory Evacuation in Areas Affected by ‘Nika’.

MANILA: Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Sunday ordered all local government units threatened by Severe Tropical Storm Nika (international name: Toraji) to implement mandatory evacuation. He particularly called on LGUs in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 2 (Cagayan Valley) and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) to evacuate residents from 2,500 barangays who are living in flood and landslide-prone areas. The weather bureau has predicted that Nika may develop into a typhoon on Sunday as it may reach its peak intensity before landfall over Isabela or Aurora on Monday morning or early afternoon. It will continue moving west-northwestward over the West Philippine Sea and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Tuesday afternoon or evening.According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla stated during a briefing in Camp Aguinaldo that all governors and mayors have been notified to advise the affected barangays to undertake mandatory evacuation starting Sunday night. He emphasized the importance of cooperation from residents to ensure their safety, highlighting the urgency with a 16-hour window to respond and evacuate. Remulla also addressed concerns about residents reluctant to leave, stressing efforts to persuade them for their safety.Remulla reported the current situation in CAR where five roads are impassable, with Department of Public Works and Highways personnel engaged in clearing operations. The Department of Social Welfare and Development has prepared to distribute food and non-food supplies to affected residents. Additionally, sea travel has been suspended from the Bicol region up to Batanes and Babuyan Islands.President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has directed the gradual release of water from six dams to prevent breaches, Remulla noted. Office of Civil Defense Director Agnes Palacio urged regions in Nika's path to enhance preparedness planning and public awareness. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has also recommended the suspension of all marine activities and advised the public t o stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidance from relevant agencies.
