TRIO Completes Enrolment for Phase 2 Giredestrant Early Breast Cancer Trial Ahead of Schedule

58 Clinical Trial Sites, 11 Countries

EDMONTON, Alberta, July 06, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Translational Research in Oncology (TRIO), a global academic clinical research organization, announced today enrolment completion in coopERA Breast Cancer (WO42133/TRIO038), a Phase 2 randomized, multi-center, open-label clinical trial of giredestrant (GDC-9545) sponsored by F. Hoffmann-La Roche. This comes shortly after completion of the planned study interim analysis provided encouraging results and supported continuation of the study.

Giredestrant is an oral selective estrogen receptor degrader (SERD) that was shown to be well tolerated with encouraging tumour activity both alone and in combination with palbociclib in estrogen-receptor positive (ER+) metastatic breast cancer patients.

The trial is investigating the ability to expand the safety and efficacy of giredestrant as monotherapy and in combination with palbociclib into the early breast cancer setting. Enrolment of 221 patients was completed three months ahead of schedule. The trial design evaluates the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of presurgical treatment with giredestrant plus palbociclib compared with anastrozole plus palbociclib for postmenopausal women with ER+ and HER2-negative untreated early breast cancer.

“To have patient enrolment completed three months ahead of schedule, despite the global pandemic, reinforces the strength of commitment of TRIO’s investigator network,” stated Dr. Vanesa Quiroga, a member of the trial’s Steering Committee, GEICAM and Catalan Institute of Oncology. “The scale of interest from patients further underlines the urgency to bring forward new treatment options to treat early stage breast cancer.”

Senior Member Of Gulen Movement Caught By Turkish Intelligence: President

ANKARA– A senior member of the Gulen movement was nabbed abroad and brought to Turkey, in an operation by Turkish intelligence, Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said yesterday.

The senior member, Orhan Inandi, was responsible for the group’s operations in Central Asia, Erdogan said, at a press conference, after a cabinet meeting.

The president also noted that over 100 members of the Gulen movement have been brought back to Turkey from abroad.

In early Jun, local media reported that, Inandi disappeared in Kyrgyzstan, where he had run Turkish-Kyrgyz schools.

The Turkish government accuses the Gulen movement of infiltrating into the state bureaucracy, and then attempting a coup on July 15, 2016.

Ankara says, U.S.-based Muslim preacher, Fethullah Gulen, was behind the coup attempt, in which 250 people were killed.

The Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on suspects, with links to the network, in the aftermath of the coup attempt.

Death Toll In Philippine Military Plane Crash Rises To 52, Full Investigation Ordered

MANILA– The death toll from a military plane crash in the southern Philippines has risen to 52, as two more critically injured soldiers died in hospital, Defence Secretary, Delfin Lorenzana, said, in an updated report yesterday.

All 96 passengers and crew in the C-130H aircraft have been accounted for, the Department of National Defence said, adding, 49 soldiers died and 47 others injured.

Lorenzana said, three civilians on the ground were also killed and four others injured.

Some of the critically injured soldiers were airlifted to Zamboanga City from Sulu. Lorenzana already ordered a “full investigation” into the crash “as soon as the rescue and recovery operation is completed.”

Major General Edgard Arevalo, Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesperson, said in an online press conference that, the retrieval operations for plane parts, including the black box, are ongoing at the crash site, and an investigative team has arrived in Sulu.

The plane was carrying newly-trained army personnel when it crashed and burst into flames, after overshooting the runway, around 11:30 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Arevalo said, some of the soldiers who died were severely charred, making it difficult to identify.

He said the C-130H plane mishap is one of the “most tragic incidents” that happened in the armed forces.

Suicide Rate In Philippines Up By 57.3 Percent In 2020

MANILA– Philippines reported a 57.3 percent increase in suicide rate in 2020, from 2019, according to a report by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

“From the 2,810 registered deaths due to intentional self-harm in 2019, this spiked to 4,420 in 2020,” said the PSA report, released yesterday.

The report did not state why more people committed suicide in 2020, while last year was indeed stressful and challenging for many Filipinos.

The COVID-19 outbreak in Jan, 2020, forced the Philippine government to impose a strict lockdown in Metro Manila and other parts of the country, to curb the spread of the virus. Thousands of people lost their jobs. Many lost their loved ones or separated from their families in the province.

The National Centre for Mental Health earlier reported “a significant increase” in calls of people suffering from depression, including suicide-related calls on its hotline, since the start of the pandemic.

The PSA said, registered deaths due to COVID-19 accounted for 4.9 percent of the total registered deaths in 2020.

The Philippines reported a total of 1,441,746 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of yesterday, including 25,192 deaths.
