United Nations-Affiliated Nonprofit Calls For Federal Intervention in Elder Abuse Investigation

WASHINGTON D.C., Aug. 13, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) –The UNITED SIKHS legal team is working with the family of an elderly Sikh man after receiving a report today that he encountered several brutal attackers inside his own home during a suspected hate crime. According to details provided by the family, who wish to stay anonymous during this hardship, the home is now a bloody crime scene in the Washington D.C. area. The elderly citizen, known as “Mr. Singh,” suffered a fractured cheek bone and other bodily injuries requiring emergency surgery.

Immediately following the report, UNITED SIKHS notified local authorities and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The family is working with police to identify the perpetrators, who remain on the loose.

“No family should have to go through this under any circumstances,” Mr. Singh’s daughter said. “These are monsters that prey on elderly people and are desperate.”

“We will ensure justice is served,” said UNITED SIKHS Trustee Sarndeep Singh, who visited Mr. Singh and his family at the hospital. “Our elders are the pillars of our community — it is unthinkable that Mr. Singh would suffer such atrocities at the hands of cruel attackers. We are praying for a speedy recovery and security for the family during this difficult time.”

Since Oct. 2018, Mr. Singh and his family have received threats from the Walden Palms Home Owners Association to sell 22 units from their real estate portfolio in Orlando, Florida. According to the family, threats included notes, phone calls and in-person conversations with association members who repeatedly stated: “You better sell, or else” and “Watch your back.” It is unclear whether the brutal beating is tied to the threats at this time, however UNITED SIKHS legal advocates are imploring authorities to explore all possible connections.

This incident comes within weeks of an attack on a Sikh priest at his home in Modesto, California. On July 25, an intruder at the Sikh Temple Modesto Ceres broke windows at 9:30 p.m. at Amarjit Singh’s home on temple grounds, punched the priest, shouted obscenities and told him to go back to his own country before fleeing, as reported in The Modesto Bee. The assailant remains at-large.

UNITED SIKHS will continue to make public updates on the situation as developments unfold. Anyone with information on Mr. Singh’s attackers are urged to call the Montgomery County Police Department at (301) 279-8000. The organization encourages all community members to stand for their rights and remain vigilant, as reported attacks against minorities remain on the rise. Civil and human rights violations may reported to UNITED SIKHS via their online incident form: https://unitedsikhs.org/report-hate-bias-crime-incident/.

Dirty, Smelly Toilets a Reflection of Poor Civic Responsibility – Dr Mahathir

PUTRAJAYA, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today he is embarrassed by the dirty and smelly state of public toilets in the country which he added reflects the poor civic responsibility of Malaysians.

I am very embarrassed. I often inspect toilets in Malaysia to see whether they are clean. Usually, they are not.

This reflects our attitude. We should be ashamed but we think no one will know who was responsible, the prime minister said when officially launching civics education for schools, here.

In contrast, public toilets in some other countries are very clean, he said, adding that this is so because the users do not dirty them.

Why? It’s because they feel they have a responsibility and appreciate the public perception of them. As such, they will keep themselves clean and will not do anything that dirties the toilets.

It is the same with actions that pollute the environment, such as dumping refuse everywhere and scribbling on walls.

It is alright if we do a mural on walls, but scribbling only tarnishes the cleanliness of the walls alongside roads in the cities, he said.

Dr Mahathir said this was not due to the laws not being strict but because of individuals who lack self-discipline.

As is well known, Dr Mahathir is drawn to the culture of the Japanese who give priority to hygiene.

Even the children (in Japan) do not discard wrappers anywhere. They fold them neatly and throw them into refuse bins, he said.

I am proud of KLIA just like in 1998 – Dr Mahathir

SEPANG, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the 21st-anniversary celebration of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today said that he is proud of the airport, just as proud as he felt in 1998 when officiating its opening.

I was proud then because it was the realisation of a dream and a promise. I am proud today because it is a reality, he said in his speech during the ‘KLIA Turns 21 A Precious Legacy’ celebration at KLIA here today.

During the speech, Dr Mahathir recalled his fond memories of KLIA which grew to be a state-of-the-art airport from once a palm oil estate on peat soil.

It was indeed amazing to witness the palm oil estate morphing into an airport of such beauty and ability to become an icon. It is an architectural wonder, he said.

Dr Mahathir also recorded his appreciation to the late Kisho Kurokawa, the renowned Japanese architect who was behind KLIA’s ‘Airport in the Forest, Forest in the Airport’ concept.

It wasn’t so at first, but after 21 years it is clearly an airport in the forest and a forest in the airport, he added.

During the event today, the Prime Minister viewed the original scale model of KLIA presented by Kisho Kurokawa Architect and Associates, It will be on permanent display at KLIA.

During a press conference later, Dr Mahathir was asked about his dream for KLIA and in his reply, he said he never thought of low-cost airlines in 1998 but now it was a big industry.

In future, maybe we (Malaysia) need a spaceport. Who knows. And you will be travelling three hours to London, he said, adding that there were already such programmes proposed by certain people to have this in Malaysia.

Asked on the growth within 100 square kilometres of KLIA, Dr Mahathir said there were many new proposals coming in.

Every Boeing or Airbus flying would have components made here in Malaysia. And we are extending component manufacture into other part areas not only composing materials but metal parts.

So there is great potential for growth especially for building up engines. Already we (Malaysia) are putting together the engines and finalising the work for engines which sometimes come from Singapore but we do the finishing work here, he said.

Asked on a recent news report on a proposal to interline KLIA and Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2), Dr Mahathir said the matter was not finalised yet.

It was reported that Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) may consider interlining KLIA and klia2 as interlining facilitates seamless movement of passengers and their baggage, especially when traffic builds up.
