Fasting Helps Control Evil Desires – Dr Mahathir

PUTRAJAYA, 6 Mei 2019 (Bernama) The fasting month of Ramadan is not just the month for Muslims to abstain themselves from eating and drinking during the day, but also to train themselves to have self-discipline and self-control over their evil nafs or desires, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

Addressing the Prime Minister’s Department staff at their monthly assembly on the first day of Ramadan this year, the premier said those capable of controlling their evil desires were usually trusted in doing things and getting every task done.

With the trust, we will also get the opportunities to do more.

(But) those who are weak (in fighting their evil desires) will not succeed, only those who are strong will, those who are strong in fighting their evil desires, he said.

The 94-year-old premier also expressed his gratitude for still being able to fast during Ramadan this year and described the act of fighting the nafs as a life-long training.

Dr Mahathir said following the path of the nafs would also lead a person to disaster.

Maybe we will succeed in achieving something, but at the end, it will bring us more harm than good, he said.

He said if all Malaysians were to fight their evil desires, he was confident that Malaysia would be more trusted and respected by the world.

As for the non-Muslims, he said they would definitely understand the reasons why Muslims had to fast during this month of Ramadan as they too have been practising some form of fasting according to their religion.

However, the main objective remains the same, that is to control oneself from sinful behaviour, he added.

No Cabinet Reshuffle, Says PM

PUTRAJAYA, May 6 2019 (Bernama) Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today reiterated that there will be no Cabinet reshuffle and that he is 100 per cent behind his team of ministers.

They (the ministers) are performing. I don’t see any reason to reshuffle the Cabinet, he said.

Speaking at a special interview in conjunction with the upcoming Pakatan Harapan (PH) first anniversary as the ruling party, the prime minister acknowledged that most of his ministers were new and inexperienced when they took office.

On top of it, he said, they are so afraid of being accused of doing the wrong things.

This makes decision-making by them difficult, but they are learning very fast, Dr Mahathir said.

When asked to evaluate his ministers, Dr Mahathir said he gave them 5 over 10 as he is very conservative.

Sometimes they do something without consulting me that should not be done. Creating some minor problems. But they learn.

Sometimes they get bad publicity because of what they do. Then, they come to me to ask what should be done. I listen to them and give my views, he said.

Dr Mahathir said that as the prime minister, he tries to teach and guide them, and he is confident that they will be as good as the experienced ones, given time.

No Solution in Sight to Turn Around Malaysia Airlines – PM

PUTRAJAYA, May 6 2019 (Bernama) The government has yet to decide on the fate of the ailing Malaysia Airlines as there is still no feasible solution in sight to turn it around, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Prime Minister said the losses and management of the national carrier was so terrible that it is difficult to turn it around.

Everyone tells me we should do it this way or that way. Nobody has come up with a proper solution that can actually succeed, he told a press conference in conjunction with the first anniversary of the Pakatan Harapan government, here today.

Dr Mahathir said the previous government had pumped in RM6 billion, while the airline had laid off 6,000 employees and cut down its routes.

He added that currently the airline industry is very competitive and many airlines had been sold off.

It is hard to compete with the emergence of the low-cost carriers and also Arab airlines which provide luxury facilities and all kinds of perks.

I do not know how they make money, but people cannot challenge them. It is a very difficult business now, he said.
